Unveiling the Truth: Can China's X-Lab AD9 Challenge the World's Top Race Bikes?
In a groundbreaking move, the X-Lab AD9 has become the first Chinese bike brand to sponsor a WorldTour team, XDS Astana, setting the stage for a potential revolution in the cycling world. With this bold step, X-Lab aims to prove its mettle against established giants like Cervélo, Colnago, Specialized, and Trek.
XDS, the carbon experts behind X-Lab, boasts that the AD9 is a wind tunnel-designed marvel, claiming it can rival the best aero bikes on the market. But is it all talk, or does the AD9 truly deliver?
The AD9's Design: A Closer Look
Unlike some of its competitors, the AD9 doesn't feature integrated bottles or cages. Instead, it sports a wide down tube that flares out, suggesting an attempt to minimize drag. However, its tube profiles aren't as deep as those of the Ridley Noah Fast 3.0 or the Cervélo S5.
Performance vs. Aesthetics: A Complex Relationship
Our previous tests have shown that looks can be deceiving. While some unconventional designs have produced lightning-fast frames, the addition of a rider can significantly alter the results. It's a delicate balance between form and function.
Data Scarcity: A Mystery Unveiled?
Intriguingly, there's a lack of detailed information about the AD9 on the XDS website. Most of our insights come from observing the bikes at races. XDS remains tight-lipped about specific performance data, leaving us eager to put this Chinese contender to the test.
Wind Tunnel Testing: Unbiased Results
To ensure impartiality, we followed a strict protocol, testing the AD9 against a baseline Trek Emonda ALR. By maintaining consistency and controlling variables, we aimed to provide an unbiased comparison. Our tests included various setups: bike-only, with-rider, and bike-only with standardized wheels, each tested at different yaw angles and speeds.
The Results: Unveiling the AD9's Performance
Starting with raw CdA data, we analyzed how the AD9 handles wind at different angles. Compared to the 'bad' aerodynamic Emonda ALR and the 'good' Factor One, the AD9 showed a less pronounced increase in aero drag as wind angle grew. Interestingly, the AD9's performance improved with a rider onboard, especially at a 15° yaw angle, outpacing the Factor ONE.
When examining the bike-only tests, the AD9 ranked in the bottom third, slightly above the Cervélo S5 (2022 version) and below the Pinarello Dogma F. It saved 33.94 watts over the Emonda baseline, but fell short of the Factor ONE by 6.34 watts.
With a rider present, the AD9 moved up the table, sandwiched between the Van Rysel RCR-F and the Pinarello Dogma F. It saved 20.81 watts over the Emonda, but was 6.76 watts behind the Cervélo S5 (2025 model).
Our error margin analysis showed a potential 3.5-watt drift, which could either elevate the AD9 to compete with the Wilier Filante SLR or push it further down the table. Nonetheless, XDS's claim that the AD9 rivals top aero bikes seems justified.
Wheel Performance: A Surprising Find
To account for wheel variability, we tested the AD9 with a set of Enve SES 4.5 wheels. Surprisingly, the AD9 performed slightly better with the Enves, saving 0.54 watts over its standard wheels. This suggests that the supplied XDS Branta carbon wheels are of high quality or work exceptionally well with the AD9's frame.
Final Thoughts: A Promising Debut
While we haven't had the opportunity to ride the AD9 extensively, our wind tunnel tests confirm XDS's claim of aerodynamic performance comparable to WorldTour bikes. It may not match the speed of top players like the Factor ONE or the Cervélo S5, but it holds its own among established brands. The AD9's consistent performance, whether with a rider or as a bike-only test, and its ability to perform well with different wheelsets, showcase its versatility.
The X-Lab AD9 has proven that Chinese bike manufacturers can compete with the best, offering a compelling alternative at a fraction of the cost. Will we see more Chinese brands enter the WorldTour scene? Only time will reveal the answer.
