A Disappointing Weekend for KTM: One Rider's Frustration with Thai MotoGP
The 2026 Thai MotoGP season opener showcased a stark contrast between Pedro Acosta and the rest of the KTM riders. While Acosta celebrated his first Sprint victory on Saturday, marking KTM's first win since 2023, his teammate Brad Binder struggled to keep up.
Binder, the best of the rest, finished sixth in the Sprint and seventh in the Grand Prix, trailing Acosta by 11.820 seconds on Sunday. The Tech3 team's Enea Bastianini also managed to score points with 17th in the Sprint and 12th in the Grand Prix.
However, the most notable performance was that of Bastianini's teammate, Maverick Vinales. Vinales, who carried KTM's hopes in the early stages of the last season, finished 19th in the Sprint and 16th in the Grand Prix, citing a chronic lack of front grip as the primary issue.
Vinales expressed his frustration, stating, 'We tried many different things, but the summary remains the same. We lack front grip, which hinders my ability to turn in corners. The front just goes wide, making me very slow in mid-corners.'
He further elaborated on the inconsistency in his performance, mentioning that he missed Turn 2 three times and the last corner twice, despite braking at the same points. Vinales attributed this to the lack of front grip, especially on the edge, as he loses grip as soon as he leans.
Vinales's disappointment was evident as he left the opening round without scoring a Grand Prix point for the first time in his world championship career, which began in the 125cc class in 2011. The contrast between Acosta's success and Vinales's struggles highlights the challenges KTM faces in finding a balance between front and rear grip.
This controversial interpretation of the race results has sparked discussions among fans and experts, with many questioning KTM's ability to address the front grip issue effectively. As the season progresses, it remains to be seen whether KTM can overcome these challenges and find a solution to improve Vinales's performance.
