Anthony Kim's Triumphant Return: A 16-Year Wait Ends at LIV Golf Adelaide
ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA — In a stunning comeback, Anthony Kim claimed the LIV Golf Adelaide title on Sunday, his first victory in nearly 16 years. The 40-year-old American's journey back to the top was marked by a challenging 12-year hiatus from competitive golf, during which he battled drug and alcohol struggles. Kim's perseverance paid off, as he secured a three-shot lead with a breathtaking 9-under 63 in the final round.
The former three-time PGA Tour winner, who last tasted success at the 2010 Houston Open, had to qualify just last month to secure his spot on the LIV Tour. Despite his struggles, Kim's determination and talent shone through. He attributed his success to his unwavering belief in himself and a message of hope for those facing similar challenges.
'It's incredible to see it happen,' Kim expressed. 'I want to thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey.'
Kim's performance at The Grange Golf Club was nothing short of spectacular. He birdied four consecutive holes (12-15) with precision, sinking putts of varying lengths. The highlight was a 15-footer on the par-4 17th, which solidified his lead. The large crowd's support fueled his confidence as he approached the 18th fairway.
Although he missed a 20-foot birdie attempt, Kim's final score of 23 under par was enough to secure victory. Jon Rahm, who shared the third-round lead with Bryson DeChambeau, finished second with a 71. DeChambeau, however, struggled with a 74, tying for third place.
The all-Australian Ripper team, including Cam Smith, Lucas Herbert, Marc Leishman, and Elvis Smylie, continued their winning streak, claiming the title for the second consecutive week and second time in Adelaide. Rahm's Legion XIII squad finished second, while Kim's 4Aces team secured a respectable third-place finish.
Kim's comeback story is a testament to resilience and determination. He reached the pinnacle of golf in 2008, ranked as high as No. 6 in the world, and played on the winning U.S. Ryder Cup team. Despite his recent struggles, Kim's return to the top is a powerful reminder that challenges can be overcome.
